Where we work
Democratic Republic of Congo
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in East Africa is one of the most forgotten areas of conflict in the world. Hugely rich in natural resources, DRC has seen one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent history, with an estimated 5.6 million killed in the last 15 years. Much of the fighting in the region can be traced back to the aftermath of the 1994 genocide in neighbouring Rwanda, although today there are vast numbers of rebel factions terrorising communities, meaning the infrastructure of the area has suffered greatly. Lawlessness rules, as does violence, particularly against women.

Eastern Congo is largely acknowledged as the ‘rape capital of the world’ and is widely quoted by NGO's as ‘the most dangerous place on earth to be a woman or girl’.

Health and maternity care is virtually non existent, and many women in Congo have simply accepted their circumstances. As one rape survivor says, ‘this is just life in Congo’.

VALUED will work with alongside local Congolese partners in two areas;
  • Improving maternal health, focusing on safe delivery
  • Facilitating care environments for victims of sexual violence.
