VITAL STATISTICS

Infant mortality in DRC is 52%.

1 in 5 children will die before their 5th birthday.

1100 women will die per 10,000 live births.
VALUED is partnering with the Lake Kivu Christian Centre in Goma, Eastern Congo to build a 20 bed maternity extension! Help us in our vision to see the extension built by December  2012.

Key features;
  • 20 beds, including two private labour rooms
  • Purpose built surgery room for caesarian sections
  • Fully trained Congolese medical team offering pre natal care, delivery and after care
  • Recovery rooms, including a kitchen and family waiting area
Currently there are no facilities of this kind in the area. Women are unable to afford to deliver at hospital, and risk staying at home in unsafe conditions to deliver their babies. Should they run into complications during labour, they are unable to afford the £75.00 currently needed for a caesarian at a nearby hospital, contributing to the shocking mortality rates for mum and baby.
The LKCC clinic will offer first rate care completely free of charge to women in Eastern Congo, giving their children the start in life that they deserve.

VITAL STATISTICS

On average, every 90 seconds a woman is raped in Congo. It often involves multiple perpetrators, mutilation and always results in devastating consequences for the victim.
In response to the rape crisis in Eastern Congo, VALUED funds vital repair surgery for women who have been destroyed by rape. This includes hospital fees, ongoing medication and further support. Whilst some women are entitled to free care if they seek treatment within three years of rape, many women do not meet this criteria, for several reasons. They may need repeat treatment, they may have been raped in the conflict more than three years ago, or may not have sought treatment due to fear and lack of understanding. These women suffer terrible internal injuries, which, if untreated, can lead to death.

VALUED needs YOUR DONATION to help pay for women to be treated at GESOM (the government clinic) in Goma, DRC. This is a excellent facility where women receive surgery, post surgery care, trauma counselling, and a stay in a safe house where they can learn basic skills and begin to reintegrate back into community. Because each surgery is so different, the cost ranges from £75.00 to £350.00.

Our aim is to ease the physical memory of the rape, so that women can begin to heal internally too.
For £20 per month you can make a real difference to the lives of women and children in the DRC.
